SEM vs PPC

Getting top position of the search engine result page SERP is very a easy task especially if you are completing a highly compatible keyword.Ranking at top of the SERP mean you will get lots of visitors thus make money. You can always use the faster way to earn money from SERP via PPC.

Organic Search Engine Marketing v. Paid Search Engine Marketing (PPC)

Organic search engine marketing is marketing a website to improve the ranking for its web pages in the organic, or natural, search engine results pages (SERPs).

Paid search engine marketing is incorporating paid advertising strategies such as Google's Adwords or Yahoo's Search Marketing in order to be listed in the "sponsored" or "advertisement" sections of the search engine results pages (SERPs).

With the increasing costs of paid search engine marketing, advertisers have been suffering from a downward trend in return on investment (ROI). On the other hand, with more sophisticated and proven strategies for organic search engine marketing, the return on investment (ROI) for those who market to rank higher naturally in the SERPs is increasing. Therefore, we advise ecommerce companies, affiliates and super-affiliates alike to shift their resources from paid search engine marketing to organic search engine marketing.

Search engine optimization

Below listed are 11 tips on how you can build Successful URLs inspire by www.seomoz.org .

Eleven Guidelines to Successful URLs.

1. Describe Your Content in URL
These URLs get pasted, shard, emailed, written down, and yes, even recognized by the engines.Yeah ,the problem is it impossible to put that much of content .so try make short. The benefit of short url at point#2

2. Keep it Short
Always remember the shorter the URL, the easier to copy & paste, read over the phone, write on a business card, or use in a hundred other unorthodox fashions, all of which spell better usability & increased branding.

3. Static is the Way & the Light
Put the "words" . Certainty that some of the engines absolutely DO treat static URLs differently than dynamic ones. And no human likes a URL where the big players are "?," "&," and "=."

4. Letters are Better than Numbers
Search engine don't know 114/ca223/ but /brand/nike/ instead. Even if the descriptive isn't a keyword or particularly informative to an uninitiated user, it's far better to use words when possible. If nothing else, your team members will thank you for making it that much easier to ID problems in development and testing.

5. Keywords Never Hurt
If you targeting on bunch of competitive keyword phrases on your website for search traffic, you never know some long tail you never think off will get ranks from URLS. so take the list from marketing, map it to the proper pages, and get to work. For dynamically created pages through a CMS, create the option of including keywords in the URL.

6. Subdomains Aren't the Answer
First off, never use multiple subdomains (e.g., siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com) - it's unnecessarily complex and lengthy. Secondly, consider that subdomains have the potential to be treated separately from the primary domain when it comes to passing link and trust value. In most cases where just a few subdomains are used and there's good interlinking.you can always 301 to the main domain.

7. Fewer Folders
A URL should contain no unnecessary folders (or words or characters for that matter), for the same reason that a man's pants should contain no unnecessary pleats. The extra fabric is useless and will reduce his likelihood of impressing potential mates.

8. Hyphens Separate Best
When creating URLs with multiple words in the format of a phrase, hyphens are best to separate the terms (e.g. /brands/dolce-and-gabbana/), followed (in order) by, underscores (_), pluses (+) and nothing.

9. Stick with Conventions
If your site uses a single format throughout, don't consider making one section unique. Stick to your URL guidelines once established, so users (and future developers) will have a clear idea of how content is organized into folders and pages. This can apply globally as well for sites that share platforms, brands, etc. Re-inventing the wheel in situations where reliance on convention makes everyone's tasks easier is folly.

10. Don't be Case Sensitive
Since URLs can accept both uppercase and lowercase characters, don't ever, ever allow any uppercase letters in your structure. If you have them now, 301 them to all-lowercase versions to help avoid confusion. If you have a lot of type-in traffic, you might even consider a 301 rule that sends any incorrect capitalization permutation to its rightful home.

11. Don't Append Extraneous Data
There's no point to having a URL exist in which removing characters generates the same content. You can be virtually assured that people on the web will figure it out, link to you in different fashions, confuse themselves, their readers and the search engines (with duplicate content issues), and then complain about it.

Yahoo SEO Drop meta keyword

Yahoo! Inc.Image via Wikipedia

This article was bought to you by rustybrick.

It is official, no major search engines use the meta keywords tag for ranking purposes in their search algorithms. Yahoo's, matter of fact, announcement of this on Tuesday during the Ask The Search Engines: Best Practices Edition at SMX East conference was a bit of a shock.

For a long time, the industry some what made fun of Yahoo for using it (at all) for ranking purposes. Then, during the Q&A period of the session, Cris Pierry, Senior Director, Search, Yahoo said at 2:09pm (EST), that they no longer use the meta keywords tag for rankings. In fact, Yahoo stopped using it a "few months ago," said Pierry.

I was a bit taken back, and so was Danny Sullivan. Danny asked Cris, why didn't Yahoo announce this? Cris basically shrug his shoulders. I then asked Cris, "are you sure?" Cris gave me a look, the look like, that was a dumb question, since he is the man now behind Yahoo Search.

So there you have it, you can now stop wasting your time with it cause Yahoo doesn't even use it. Oh, well, if you use Yahoo paid inclusion or use a custom search feature, you may need to continue to use it, but outside of that - no need.

Does Directories Help SEO

Instead of optimize the content of a website to get a good position on SERP .Getting inbound links is one most important factors when doing SEO.

The truth is,It is not easy to get good one way inbound links nowadays. A relatively easy way to get a one way inbound links is to submit websites to Internet directories.

But do these Internet directory links still have value when it comes to search engine rankings? Can you increase the position of your website in Google's search results by submitting your site to Internet directories?

A case study

An internet marketer tested three pages that were orphaned within the normal navigation structure of the website. These three pages were created to provide valuable content to search engines.

The three pages were submitted to some high quality paid directories (Yahoo, BestOfTheWeb, Joe Ant) and free directories.

About 45 days after the paid directory links went live, the web pages had increased visibility on search engines. Visits and conversions also increased and the tracking of the marketer indicated that at least 50 percent of the results could be attributed to the directory links.

The final results that were attributed to the directory link building included:

  • a lift of traffic to levels that other highly visible site pages receive within 90 days
  • an increase in monthly conversions for the business line of 45 percent year-over-year

What does this mean?

Getting links from Internet directories should be a fundamental part of any search engine optimization strategy. You should submit your website to all big Internet directories and to Internet directories that cover your niche.

Links from Internet directories are only one way to get links from other sites. . you also need links from websites that are related to yours.

Does Google Rewrite Your Title Tags

There are certain situations where Google replace a title in search results as is happening at exampe/question below:

"Google rewriting my Title Tag descriptions on my pages, this has never happened before now and my sites been indexed for at least 5 years. If you look at the title on http://www.animationarena.com/best-animation-schools.html it’s “Best Animation Schools” but when you search in Google the Title shows up as Schools that teach Flash - Best Animation Schools and this page has nothing to do with Flash Animation Schools, Why would google do this? "

And it answered by JohnbMu (Google Employee)

If Google find that the same title is used on a number of pages or if the title is otherwise not that good (eg "Home"). It looks like in this case we chose a weird title.

Search Ranking tips:engaging titles

How to develop a engaging titles for all pages of your site. The title of you blog /web will effect your search engine ranking, pay attention on it.

How to change the titles of your web pages to get more visitors?

The titles that you use for your web pages are very important. They are an important factor for the ranking algorithms of search engines and they are the first thing that web surfers see when they find your website in the search results.

boring web page title

Depending on which kind of traffic you want to attract, you should use different title formats on your web pages:

1. News titles (not so good for SEO)

This kind of title is often used by bloggers and news websites. Here are some examples:

* Beat the 'overqualified' tag
* Parking fees spark meter madness
* Nominate your hero
* Karl Malden died

The problem with these titles is that they are not good for search engine optimization. These titles usually don't contain relevant keywords and they don't look very attractive in the search results.

There won't be many people who will type "Parking fees spark meter madness" in Google's search box so it's not likely that the page will get many visitors through search engines.

2. Shopping titles (good for SEO)

Shopping titles usually contain a product name that is used by web surfers. If they also contain a call to action, you can get targeted visitors with these titles. Here are some examples:

* ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Black Netbook - 9.5 Hour Battery Life
* ASUS Eee PC 1000 - Buy it now for only $249.95
* Buy an ASUS Eee PC 1000 with extended guarantee
* Free shipping: ASUS Eee PC 1000 - $249.95

The first shopping title is rather descriptive because it only lists the features. The other titles contain a call to action (buy now), prices and additional benefits (free shipping).

People who want to buy an ASUS Eee PC probably will click on the title with the call to action while people who are looking for product information might choose the first title.

3. Information seeker titles (good for SEO)

Information seeker titles won't attract buyers but people who are looking for information about a special topic. Here are some examples:

* How to lose weight as fast as possible
* How to repair a broken chair
* 12 mistakes most parents make when choosing a school
* How to find the perfect golf club
* 5 ways to find the perfect partner

These web page titles are good because they will attract visitors over a long time period. People are always looking for "how to" articles and solutions to their problems and you will get long term, constant traffic with these pages.

Action plan: how to change your current web page titles

Good web page titles can make a huge difference in the number of visitors that your website gets. For that reason, you should check the titles of all web pages of your website now:

* Make sure that the titles of your web pages are descriptive. It should be clear what to expect on the pages.
* If possible, add a call to action and benefits in your web page title.
* Put the most important information at the beginning of the title. Search engines might shorten the title in the search result pages and people might not see the complete text.
* If you're not a major brand name, avoid your company name in your web page titles.
* Do not use the same title for all of your web pages. This is a mistake that many beginners make.

How To Get Rank In Bing SEO

How To Rank Well For Keywords In Bing

Microsoft have also released a 24-page paper on how their search engine works and related SEO implications. I would advise webmasters to download the document
and read it
Bing's FAQs state that you should do the following on-site seo to rank well in their search engine:

· Target no more than two keywords per page
· Use unique title tags on each page
· Use unique meta description tags on each page
· Use H1 tags
· Use text navigation links
· Create content for your human visitors, not the Bing web crawler
· Incorporate keywords into URL strings

Back links

For backinks, they state that they prefer quality to quantity and that "Backlinks should be relevant to the page being linked to or relevant to your domain if being linked to the homepage.
Within the webmaster tools, they rate your backlinks from one to five in a little green bar - the higher the green bar the higher the quality of the link in Bing's eyes.
However they don't actually say whether these backlinks should be anchored or not. I'm guessing that like Google they want anchored backlinks.

Google Ranking system Goes Wild!

I get totally different results when I am logged into my gmail account.

My site showed #2 for all searches regardless of whether or not I was logged in to my google account.

I have 10+ sites of different topics. Most of them have appeared on page one for their respective key words. On April 1, ALL of them dropped to page 4-5. I got the feeling they are banned, but I don't understand why. No bought links, no tricks. The sites have been up for 1-3 years, inmproving their search results month by month. On the most popular site, the search results have been like a ping pong cirkus the last month. Always different results, just a big tornado among the search results.

I have removed all links between my sites, removed some of the affiliate links, rewritten descriptions... Nothing helps.
Anyone who has experienced the same and got back in position?

Whatever the SERP volatility is, it's been showing us very odd behavior -- unlikely pages fly into the top spots for a bit and then vanish. By the way, the MySpace page I mentioned seeing at #4 yesterday is ranking at #53 today.

This brings up a good point - we should all make sure that we are not logged in to a Google account when we check the SERPs. If we are logged in, then we see personalized results that are tailored to our total behavior when we are logged in - what we click on in the past, post specifically. So the logged in results are not so useful for understanding any changes in the ranking algo.

I've seen horrifying drops in one of my sites. 50% loss of traffic since February 15th or so, when this all started going down. This past week I'm looking at the worst traffic ever.

And yet: I'm still ranking very competitively for most of my key phrases, I haven't done anything under the table, adding new content every day, lots of nice links coming ing (.edu, .gov, etc.). Some of the really awful sites that weren't much of a competition to me on my most competitive phrases are now ranking above me - and they are really, really awful. Like embarrassing awful.

So I don't know what's going on, I've read this entire thread (18 pages worth, oy vey), and I guess the consensus is to just sit it out and wait? Because honestly, I think I've got the worst case scenario over here for a site that has been number one for extremely competitive phrases for almost five years, and traffic has decided to take an extended vacation.

I'm giving up with Google. The more I do, the worse things get for me. Not true with Yahoo or Bing though. My rankings there are directly proportional to my efforts, and are always measurable

PageRank sculpting VS Nofollow Tag

Use rel:dofollow for your internal linking Google has cofirmed that external linking of any kind bleeds PR from the page. Following or nofollowing .

It been over a year Google use it to ranking system. Why tell us now?

Quate
A: For a couple reasons. At first, we figured that site owners or people running tests would notice, but they didn’t. In retrospect, we’ve changed other, larger aspects of how we look at links and people didn’t notice that either, so perhaps that shouldn’t have been such a surprise. So we started to provide other guidance that PageRank sculpting isn’t the best use of time. When we added a help page to our documentation about nofollow, we said “a solid information architecture — intuitive navigation, user- and search-engine-friendly URLs, and so on — is likely to be a far more productive use of resources than focusing on crawl prioritization via nofollowed links.” In a recent webmaster video, I said “a better, more effective form of PageRank sculpting is choosing (for example) which things to link to from your home page.” At Google I/O, during a site review session I said it even more explicitly: “My short answer is no. In general, whenever you’re linking around within your site: don’t use nofollow. Just go ahead and link to whatever stuff.” But at SMX Advanced 2009, someone asked the question directly and it seemed like a good opportunity to clarify this point. Again, it’s not something that most site owners need to know or worry about, but I wanted to let the power-SEOs know.

Quote:matt cutts

“Google itself solely decides how much PageRank will flow to each and every link on a particular page. In general, the more links on a page, the less PageRank each link gets. Google might decide some links don’t deserve credit and give them no PageRank. The use of nofollow doesn’t ‘conserve’ PageRank for other links; it simply prevents those links from getting any PageRank that Google otherwise might have given them.”

If a link on your website is internal (that is, it points back to your website), let it flow PageRank--no need to use nofollow. If a link on your website points to a different website, much of the time it still makes sense for that link to flow PageRank.

The time when I would use nofollow are when you can’t or don’t wxnt to vouch for a site, e.g. if a link is added by an outside user that you don’t particularly trust. For example, if an unknown user leaves a link on your guestbook page, that would be a great time to use the nofollow attribute on that link.

With this change, I can still get the $4 if I simply don’t allow comments. Or I show comments, but I use an iframe, so that the comment actually reside on a different page. In either case, I’m encouraged to reduce the number of links rather than let them be on the page period, nofollow regardless. If I’m worried my page won’t seem “natural” enough to Google without them, maybe I allow 5 comments through and lock them down after that.

Rather than clarify things, I feel like this is what your post is going to do -- cause people to consciously reduce the number of links they allow on their pages. We’re going to see an increase in iframe usage or other techniques to reduce links and flow more PageRank to the remaining links, for those who really worry/believe in such things.

The above question still not directly answerd.

Google:Use of rel=canonical meta tag

If you have a single product page that can have multiple urls with slightly different parameters, that’s a great time to use a rel=canonical meta tag. You can use rel=canonical for pages with session IDs in a similar fashion. What rel=canonical lets you do is say “this page X on my host is kinda of ugly or otherwise isn’t the best version of this page.

Use url Y as the preferred version of my page instead.” You can read about rel=canonical at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394. Bear in mind that if you can make your site work without session IDs or make it so that you don’t have multiple “aliases” for the same page, that’s even better because it solves the problem at the root.

I)Site Linking FA
Social sites and blogs the same as any other site

Anonymous: What weigh tag is given to the links from social networking sites and blogs?
Nathan J: I would treat social sites and blogs the same as any other site.
It doesn't matter your site new/old .it carry same weight .
Rick Rayn: What weight does the age of a site and the amount of time a domain is registered for have on it's search placement?
Matt Cutts: In the majority of cases, it actually doesn't matter--we w*nt to return the best information, not just the oldest information. Especially if you're a mom/pop site, we try to find ways to rank your site even if your site is newer or doesn't have many links. I think it is fair for Google to use that as a signal in some circumstances, and I try never to rule a signal out completely, but I wouldn't obsess about it.

"Directory" do carry link weight but not that much.
Marjy, Boca Raton FL: Recently, you removed this suggestion: "Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!" from your guidelines. Is there any chance that you will be discounting these kinds of links for ranking value in future?
Matt Cutts: Hey Marjy (testing out this 'post a response' thing ie). There's always the chance that we'll discount directory links in the future. What we were seeing was quite a few novice people would see the "directory" recommendation and go out and just try to submit to a ton of directories, even if some of the directories were lower-quality or even fly-by-night directories that weren't great for users. Right now we haven't changed how we're weighting directory links--we've only removed the directory suggestion from the webmaster guidelines.
myln, Europe: Until recently external links from article directories could improve page ranking. Is this still valid? Do links from article directories have a better weight than links from web sites or blogs?
Matt Cutts: Article directory links certainly aren't inherently worth more and don't get more weight than other web sites or blogs. I answered another question about article directories as well.

Cross-link among your site is fine provider they're relevant.
Scott, Minnetonka: Do inbound links from other sites owned by the same company help or hurt rank?
Matt Cutts: I find that inbound links from the same company tend to break down into two camps. You'll find mom/pops that have a very few sites in one camp, and that can make sense if those sites are linked; in the other camp, I've see SEOs have 1000 or 2000 different domains and cross-link them. I definitely would not recommend that.
I think a lot of the litmus test in my mind is whether it makes sense to a regular person for those domains to be interlinked. If you look at a product like Coke, people aren't surprised to see that they have coca-cola.co.nz and several other domains. If you go to coke.com, it's perfectly reasonable to ask users which country they're coming from, and then send them to one of a bunch of domains. But if a regular user lands on example.com and finds 20 or 30 cross-links at the bottom of the page and they look like off-topic or cookie-cutter or spammed domains, that's going to look bad to almost anyone.

Link from .gov and .edu with 0 page don't get any PageRank boost advantage.
TylerDee, TX: Are .gov and .edu back links still considered more "link juice" than the common back link?
Matt Cutts: This is a common misconception--you don't get any PageRank boost from having an .edu link or .gov link automatically. Hah John, I beat you to it! If you get an .edu link and no one is linking to that .edu page, you're not going to get any PageRank at all because that .edu page doesn't have any PageRank.
No worry bout "rel=nofollow" or totally "nofollow" thing.
Raj,In: Will too much of "rel=nofollow" or totally "nofollow" to all outgoing links by the author of a blog be stamped as over optimization and penalized? Is there any penalty for over optimization sort of stuff?
JohnMu: I wouldn't worry about this, Raj. I would try to work on making the site as natural as possible.(not exacty answer the question)
Social media do help in ranking although google don't crawl javascript.
egarolera, barcelona: How will social media or more specifically share of comments (buzz about a brand) influence the serps?
Maile Ohye: Hi egarolera, social media is great! But, there are a few things to say about this... Social media can add buzz to your site, finding new visitors, people linking to you, etc. That's a bonus and the more users that enjoy your content, often the better your site will show in SERPs. We want results to reflect what users are searching for, so social buzz can certainly be helpful.
A few things to note:
1. If you allow user-generated content on your site, remember to monitor for spam.
2. Also, if you're looking to get buzz to directly help your site in SERPs, know that we normally don't crawl javascript, so if it's hosted in JavaScript you'll still get the user traffic from the buzz (which can eventually lead better rankings), but the user comments themselves won't be indexed.
3. If you w*nt to get the user-generated content associated with your site (as part of your URLs), then make sure you host the user-generated content on your domain (so it's not link to a separate site). Thanks, egarolera!

They don't like you to sell link
wildnis, Vancouver, Canada: What is ok/not ok to sell links? We get requests on a daily base, we not offering to sell links, but sometimes we get a related request and wonder if we are "allowed" to sell one or two links without hurting our rankings?
Nathan J: Paid links that pass pagerank are not a good idea; more info here - http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66736
Let them expire over time
Anonymous: I recently went through and "cleaned up" my Wordpress site by deleting some old posts and unnecessary categories/tags. I re-submitted a new Sitemap, but I still see several "Not Found" web crawl errors in Webmaster Central. Will this fix itself?
JohnMu: In some situations it could be that you can 301 redirect some old URLs to relevant new ones, otherwise it's fine to let them return 404. The errors are not something to worry about, they're just for your information, so it's fine to leave them there and to let them expire over time
Fewer the links FROM your website, the more influence (not 100% answer the question)
Allen Graves, Tampa, Florida: Is it true that the fewer the links FROM your website, the more influence they have on the sites receiving those links?
JohnMu: PageRank is split up over the links from a page, but I would recommend not concentrating on this (as you won't be able to "measure" and act upon it anyway) and instead making your site as usable as possible for your visitors.
Relevance for each link property will vary
Urban Kudos, London, UK: Can you tell me how Google decides whether to include video on the first page of the SERPS or not? Views? Links? Age? Relevance? What's the most important?
Matt Cutts: I think relevance is always the top-level answer, because we want the best information (be it search results, videos, or even ads) to come up highly. And relevance for each property will vary--for ads it might be clickthrough, and for video it might be different signals.

Does Googlebot treat content and links within NOSCRIPT as normal content and links
Anonymous: Does Googlebot treat content and links within NOSCRIPT as normal content and links, assuming the webmaster is not using noscript to cloak or otherwise deceive?
Maile Ohye: Hi there, I think I know the answer, but let me check with our crawl and indexing teams just to double-check. (I'm risk averse! :) If we're able to disclose the information, I'll find a way to post in follow-up from the event.
How to keep dynamically generated sitelinks?
Sean Carlos, Italy: A site has lost sitelinks. No significant changes were made to site architecture, e.g. menu templates. Overall public PR has actually increased. Suggestions as to how to keep dynamically generated sitelinks? How often are they recalculated?
Nathan J: Sitelinks are dynamically generated - more info here - http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=47334

It may not show all of the links that Google knows about
krish, In: Does link:(in search customize) gives exactly the number of back links to a site?
Wysz: The link: operator only shows a sampling of links to a site, so it may not show all of the links that Google knows about. To find more information about backlinks to your own site, we give verified site owners more information about backlinks in Webmaster Tools:

No risk of an impact on your site's rankings if you use the attribute
Anonymous: Can my site be penalized if I use rel="nofollow" too much?
Kaspar aka Guglarz: No, you run no risk of an impact on your site's rankings if you use the attribute :-)

II)301 redirection

301's are the best way to retain users and search engine tra*ffic when moving dom*ains.
Anonymous: Does 301 Redirect moves the Google Page Ranking to the new location? If so how long does it take for this to take effect?
Wysz: Where appropriate, ranking signals will be transferred across 301 redirects (if the same page has moved from one URL to another). This may take some time, so you should probably leave the redirect in place as long as you have control over the URL. That way any new links will make our crawler follow the 301.
Cynthia, San Francisco: Recently went through a rebranding of our company name. The old domain name was successful in page ranking, however the new domain name has terrible page ranking. Do 301 redirects transfer the site equity from the old domain to new domain?
Answer: Hi Cynthia, This is a pretty common question, so we actually did a blog post about it recently. In short, 301's are the best way to retain users and search engine traffic when moving domains. You can find the full post here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/best-practices-when-moving-your-site.html
SteveJohnston, Bath, UK: Are subdomains considered entirely separate entities if they have no links from the parent domain. e.g. if widget.example.com has no links from www.example.com, is it on its own in terms of reputation, or will it rank through association alone?
JohnMu: We treat each URL separately. That said, if you have www and non-www versions of your site, I'd recommend setting a preferred domain and setting up a 301 redirect. Also, sometimes it makes sense to add both your www and non-www versions in Webmaster Tools so that links for both versions are known (and shown). Susan recently covered that in a blog post at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/10/wheres-my-data.html
A 302 is used for temporary redirects, so this is less likely to transfer ranking signals.
Kyle Wegner, Atlanta, GA: If I 301 redirect a well-ranked page to a new domain with the exact same content, will all of the rankings be replaced with the new domain once it has been indexed? How long after indexing can we expect the swap? And is the same thing true for 302s?
Wysz: If you're moving from one URL to another (even if it's on a different domain), ranking signals can be passed via a 301. A 302 is used for temporary redirects, so this is less likely to transfer ranking signals.
Rename something, use 301 redirects appropriately.
BaileyQueue, Santa Cruz, CA: I have a folder (used in URL path), it's name includes a hyphen, which I read was not friendly for google. It is an important folder, I cannot rename without interfering with our archive links (2004-present). What should I do?
JohnMu: Hyphens and underscores are fine :-). If you do decide to rename something, I'd recommend making sure that you use 301 redirects appropriately.

301 redirect is optimal in a situation like that
dgj, san diego: A parent co. requires their subsidiaries use sub-domains of the parent. Will a 301 redirect from old domain to new sub-domain pass link value? (e.g. Parent co.: www.123.abc.com; Subsid. former: www.xxx.yyy.com; New Subsid.: www.xxx.123.abc.com).
JohnMu: dgj, yes a 301 redirect is optimal in a situation like that.

III)Page rage and Indexing Guideline

Coution!!Spammer around.
Anonymous: 1000's of junks sites are spamming Google index & Googlers still find time to penalize or ban more genuine sites. How do you plan to fight spam in longer term.
Answer: Thanks for being interested in keeping our index free of spam. If you do find sites violating our webmaster guidelines, please submit a spam report here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreport
As far as how we fight spam, we can't reveal too much. Spammers might be rea*ding. (clever answer that use in answering Google Adsense click fuote questions)
Tips:If you having some kind of crab site. No notifications from Google for penalty. If you have added something evil in you site but you do have good original content ,you would be informed about a temporary removal from Google results via Google Webmaster Tools.
Anonymous: Do you feel that the webmaster should be informed in case of a manual penalty & the reconsideration requests should be looked into more seriously in case of a manual penalty.

Kaspar aka Guglarz: Hey! That is a very good question, that we are being asked on a regular basis. So, imagine you have a site on which you add original content and/or tools on a regular basis.

If it has been hacked and contains hidden content/links or you are a website owner and your webmaster did something he/she was not aware of being outside Google webmaster guidelines, like a 0 seconds redirection. In that case chances are high you would be informed about a temporary removal from Google results via Google Webmaster Tools.
The message will surely contain hints regarding the problem on the site. Once you have fixed it, your reconsideration request will be reviewed very carefully.
On the other hand, if you have a couple of hundreds of identical sites with - for example - scraped content from other sites, these are not adding any value to the Internet and I would not expect any notifications from Google.
Hight bounce rate hurt your page rage.
chrisff, palo alto, ca: Is the bounce rate and speed taken into account when ranking a page? i.e. if you see a searcher click on a result then return very quickly and choose another result, is the first page ranked lower?
JohnMu: Hi chrisff, assuming that users will be jumping out of a site like that, there's a high probability that they won't be willing to recommend it to others (or come back themselves). So yes, indirectly at least, if a site is made in a way that users run away right away, then chances are that we might not be recommending it as much as other sites that users like (and recommend to others).
Is keyword density of any importance to show what the page is about?
tewmonkey, cardiff, wales: Many believe that to rank well, you simply need "quality" backlinks. But how important is having your keywords in the , and throughout your site? Is keyword density of any importance to show what the page is about? What % is suggested?
Wysz: Links are just one factor involved in Google's ranking of pages. We look at both on-page and off-page content, so what you have on your page can be an essential part of ranking. However, there is no recommended "keyword density." Your content should be high quality and written for users. If you try writing for search engines, the language can become very unnatural, which may end up hurting you more than it helps.?

IV)Webmaster Guidelines

Anonymous: What are most important aspects Google uses to rank a Site today?
Nathan J: The Help Center Webmaster Guidelines cover important info for getting indexed and ranked - http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769 . Lots of good content here.
site's ranking in Image Search doesn't impact your site's PageRank .Well-optimized, relevant images have a change to appear at normal web search results .
Andy Y, Beijing, China: Does appearing high in image searches help improve the host sites PR and appearance on standard searches?
Answer: Thanks for the question Andy. Well-optimized, relevant images could definitely help increase traffic to your site, especially with the introduction of Universal Search, where we mix images, videos, and more into the web search results.
JohnMu: Your site's ranking in Image Search doesn't impact your site's PageRank. However, as we continue to include images and other types of content in the search results, we might start showing your images in normal web search results as well. So I'd definitely recommend making sure that your great images (if you have them :-)) are available to search engine crawlers.

Tell Google the geotarget (country) of a particular webpage(Nice name? )

Anonymous: Is there a META tag we can use to tell Google the geotarget (country) of a particular webpage?
Maile Ohye: Hi Anonymous (nice name! :), we don't have META geotargeting capability at this time. So the best ways to target a geographic region are talked about here:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-start-multilingual-site.html
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/10/better-geographic-choices-for.html
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/where-in-world-is-your-site.html
Page load time play a crucial role in Google Page Ranking.(not 100% answer)Anonymous: Does a page load time play a crucial role in Google Page Ranking? If yes how important is it?
Nathan J: I think the more important issue here is user experience. If your site loads fast, your users will be happy; if it loads slow, users will be less happy. Make your users happy, right?

File a reconsideration request after getting banned by google in SERP

rnold, delhi , in: How will i know that a website is banned by google in SERP (search engine result pages).

Wysz: To see if you're indexed in Google, try a site: search on your site. For example, site:example.com. We may also drop a message in the Message Center of your Webmaster Tools account if we detect an issue with your site.

In general, it's best to make sure you stay within the webmaster guidelines: http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

If you feel your site may have been penalized, go ahead and fix the problems, then file a reconsideration request: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35843

V)Identify original content and RSS scrapers

Raj, In: You claim that you can identify original content and RSS scrapers, but still why scrapers are ranking better for certain keywords?
Wysz: We do our best to identify duplicates and identify the best URL for a set of content. There are a couple of ways you can help us out with this.
In your content, if you're providing articles or other information that may be syndicated across other sites, include a full link (not just a relative link) back to your site so you can more easily be identified as the originator of the content.
And if you find that a scraper site is spamming Google's search results, please submit a spam report via Webmaster Tools:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35265

There is plenty of savvy webmasters eager to help, along with Google guides monitoring the community and joining the discussions occasionally :-)

content that is placed in divs that are hidden/display none

SteveJohnston, Bath, UK: How does Google view content that is placed in divs that are hidden/display none until a user does something? These are also good places to stuff SEO content that a user may never see. What is best practise from Google's point of view?

Wysz: Hi Steve, I've addressed this question in the Google Webmaster Help Group here:

http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Indexing/browse_thread/thread/b2d09046ab4d5ed/

And here:

http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Indexing/browse_thread/thread/5d31cc395fe20b64/

What is boils down to is intent:

If it's there for the user, you're probably safe. If you're trying to deceive search engines... that's risky. :)

VI)Change of algorithms

ecurtin, London, England: How often does your search algorithm change?

JohnMu: We change the algorithms all the time - last year we had over 450 changes. http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4259137.html

Using hyphens instead of underscores

Alex W, UK: Should I be using hyphens instead of underscores in my URLs to improve a page's rank?

Matt Cutts: For the time being, I would recommend still using hyphens instead of underscores. If you're already using underscores and that's working fine for you and your rankings, it's not worth switching. But if you're doing a new site, then I would go with hyphens.

VII)Languages and Region

Google might not treat original content for different languages content it the same way

Andy Y, Beijing, China: Regarding international websites, we have sites in about 10 different languages, yet they have very different rankings with nearly identical content. Does the googlebot struggle with some languages? What can be done?

JohnMu: Hi Andy, we look at content on a URL by URL basis, so even if you have translated top content from one language to another, we might not treat it the same way as we would treat the original content. It's also possible that the translated content is not as relevant as other original content in that language. Generally speaking, making sure that your content is as unique and compelling as possible for the users in that target market is the best thing to do.
Content shows only to certain geolocation
MG, Orlando, FL: I have 2 sites, one is domain.com and the other one is domain.au. They share a lot of their content, is there a way to keep the content on both sites without blocking it on either, while ensuring they only show on their respective geo locations.
Maile Ohye: Hi MG, you're situation sounds pretty good for targeting users globally and specifically in Australia (is that au?). It's helpful that you have separate TLDs. While you can't "ensure" that your content shows only to certain geolocation, you can use some of our features to help. Here are more resources in case you missed them:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-start-multilingual-site.html

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/10/better-geographic-choices-for.html

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/where-in-world-is-your-site.html

So for Australia, domain.au will help with targeting and Webmaster Tools will not be needed.

For other areas -- say Canada, you can use geolation in Webmaster Tools for canada.domain.com or www.domain.com/ca or www.domain.com/canada...

Rank in the various regions

Anonymous: Does a multi-language site have any positive or negative impact in terms of rankings?

JohnMu: Multi-language sites attract a larger group of users, so over time they'll help your site to rank in the various regions that your users come from.

VIII)Domain and Sub-domain . and /

Anonymous: Is abc.com/def better or def.abc.com better in terms of Search Engine Positioning.Nathan J: From a search engine standpoint, both are good - it really is a matter of preference. Depending on what you're trying to do, it may be easier to manage one over the other.

PageRank is on a page-by-page basis.

Mayu J, Sri Lanka, Colombo: If my sub domain got high Page Rank, how far it will contribute to the main domain?

JohnMu: Hi Mayu, PageRank is on a page-by-page basis. The PageRank of a page (on a subdomain or not) is based on the links to it.
PageRank will flow immediately
Sandeep Khetan, India: Sub-Domains are considered as a new site for Search Engines, if a 5 years old site which uses forums.domain.com, www.domain.com now plans to add shop.domain.com and download.domain.com will this take another few years for both new domains to get rank
Matt Cutts: PageRank is purely at a page level, so if you forums.domain.com has a high PageRank and links to new urls such as download.domain.com, that PageRank will flow immediately.

Conclusion :
While we listen to them.one simple conclusion is:Focused primarily on the user experience, quality content, and interactivity.you will be save and get ranked.

Duplicate Penalties and rel="canonical"

Removing Duplicate Penalties

Upon further review of the new tag rel=canonical, that is used to let search engines know what URL you want indexed for any given page of your site, I can't find any reason why you wouldn't want to make it a standard part of every Web page on your site. This tag proactively handles a number of potential duplicate content issues.

*special note about "duplicate content penalties": Some people feel that it is very important to be clear that a duplicate content "penalty" is not really a penalty. Google is not punishing your site for having a Web page that has the same content as another Web page.

But what it is happening is, if your page is not the original version of the content, it is highly likely that your page will be put into the supplemental index which makes it less likely to rank well for competitive terms. So in effect, it's the same end result of incurring a penalty but in fact there has been no "penalty." For some reason this game of semantics is very important to some members of the SEO community, so I wanted to make sure I was clear with everyone that I know the phrase "duplicate content penalty" is not entirely accurate, but it is how most people view the situation.

Having said that, here are some of the issues that the rel=canonical tag can help with:

• Capitalization: The search engines treat each unique URL string as a separate entity. So any variation in a URL, no matter how slight, creates a new URL in the eyes of the search engine. This includes differences in capitalization, although Google specifically has been much better at figuring this out on its own since the "Big Daddy" update. So for example, when an engine indexes these URLs:
http://www.businessol.com/seo-blog/ and http://www.businessol.com/Seo-Blog/ it sees two different URLs for the same content.

This happens often because Webmasters are not standardized in the way that they link to 3rd party websites. Some Webmasters and blogs capitalize letters in URLs out of coding practices or habit.

Search Engine Optimization Tips and News:

In the old days, Google would have not been able by itself to figure out that these two URLs are the same page. And therefore one of these two URLs (most likely the one with the least amount of Page Rank) would have been put into supplemental results and the links that pointed to it would essentially be lost (because now they point to a page in the supplemental results that isn't going to rank for much and they are not helping the other URL that is listed in Google). But nowadays, Google is pretty good about figuring this stuff out although not perfect. And the other engines are not very good at this kind of thing. So by including the Rel=Canonical tag on every page of the site, you make it easy for all the engines to consolidate URLs that have capitalization problems.

• Dynamic URL Strings: Whether its tracking codes like www.domain.com?tracking-code or CMS systems that generate multiple URLs for the same page, the issues with these pages are the same as the issues for capitalization. But now instead of an elaborate 301 redirect strategy or costly adjustments to your backend system, this simple tag solves the problem.

• Other Canonical Issues: Some other issues that Google already does fairly well but that can still cause problems include www versus non www version of the Web site (domain.com versus www.domain.com), session IDs and also linking using IP addresses. This tag if correctly implemented, should fix all of these problems.

Given the number of potential issues that this tag can correct, it should be added to every page of your site. If your site is dynamic, this should be a pretty easy addition.

Search Engine Optimization Tips and News:

Google SEO Tool to Stop Duplicate Content Problems!
Good news from Google, Yahoo and MSN/Live who have announced support for the rel="canonical" tag.

This new tag with the following syntax:
http://www.example.com/product.php?item=whatever" rel="canonical"

This should be placed in the head section of each page of the site, with the URL that should be used as the primary URL for that page.

So if for example, if this page is linked to somewhere in the site with this URL:
http://www.example.com/product.php?item=whatever&trackingid=1234

where a tracking id has been appended, Google, Yahoo and MSN will now understand that this page is really the original:
http://www.example.com/product.php?item=whatever

Therefore the duplicate URL is not indexed and the link connectivity is assigned to the right page. This is a wonderful new tool that now allows sites with extensive tracking codes to use that technology without duplicate content issues. Additionally, sites have CMS systems or dynamic Web platforms that generate multiple URL combination for the same page can now be brought under control without a huge list of 301 redirects. Cheers to the search engines for getting this one right.

Search Engine Optimization Tips on avoid supplemental results from Google.

1) Always have a unique Page Title and Meta Description for EVERY page of the Web site.

2) Try to limit the number of dynamic parameters in your URL strings to three or less. I know Google will index more than that, but Google is not the only search engine and the others are less consistent. Additionally, the longer the URL, the less likely Google will always get it right.

3) ***IMPORTANT. LOL. Make sure you only have ONE distinct URL path to any page of content and your site and that you are consistent in the way you link to that page (file name versus folder name). Don't use capital letters in your URL string. Often Webmasters will link to you with only lowercase letters because of their coding standards and you will have both the URL with the capital letters and the one without indexed in the engines. They are seen as separate pages by the search engines which can cause duplicate content issues and at best case will split your Page Rank.

4) Make sure you have your pages crossed linked in such a way that all relevant pages link to each other. Not only does this increase the usability of your site, but it increases the opportunity for deep level pages to get Page Rank. A page that is 8 levels deep in your site with only one inbound link is not likely to be seen as being very important.

5) Make sure the content on all your pages is unique. Pages with similar or the same content, whether they appear on your own site or a different Web site are actively filtered by Google. Google will not going to show the same content 10 times for a specific keyword phrase. So in the past, the document they considered to be the original was included in the main index and the copies were indexed in the supplemental results. Thus the phrase "duplicate content penalty". I am sure that a similar mechanism still exists because nothing has changed in Google don't like similar results for the same query.
